LOCAL WIND SPEED ESTIMATES

Q. How can I obtain my local average wind speed?
A. The only way to accurately measure the average wind speed on your site is to have a site survey conducted by Innovative Energy Solutions. As part of this survey we can install a wind guage to record wind speeds over a set period of time.

Local wind speed is an important factor in determining the performance of a wind turbine. If you do not know the average annual wind speed in your area you can consult the following websites to obtain an approximate figure.

There are a number of ways you can obtain this figure:

If you live in the United Kingdom
You can consult the BERR NOABL Wind Map on the RenSMART website if you have your post code.

If you live in the Republic of Ireland
You can consult the Sustainable Energy Ireland wind map.

Alternatively:

If you live in Great Britain
1)You can obtain your Ordnance Survey Grid Reference at streetmap.co.uk if you know your post code. Enter your post code into the blank text field, select the post code option then click on the Convert button. Take a note of your LR grid reference e.g. SU387147

2)Enter the first 2 letters, followed by the first, second, fourth & fifth numeric digits of your Ordnance Survey Grid Reference into the BERR Wind Speed Database to obtain an estimate of your local wind speed e.g. from an LR grid reference of SU387147 you would take SU387147 and enter SU3814 into the wind speed database.

If you live in Northern Ireland
1)Enter your post code into the Action Renewables wind speed mapping page and click the Find button on the right-hand side.
2)Click on the zoom icon beside your post code result to centre the map on your location. Then click on your exact location on the map to display your average local wind speed on the left-hand side of the page.

or

1)You can obtain your Ordnance Survey Grid Reference at the Irish Grid Reference site. Take a note of your grid reference.
2)Enter the first letter, followed by the first, second, fourth & fifth numeric digits from your 'normal grid reference' (without spaces) into the BERR Wind Speed Database (selecting Northern Ireland) e.g. from a normal grid reference of J 234 936 you would take J 234 936 and enter J2393 into the database.
